Whether you are planning your first or a new addition to your growing family, every birth is worthy and deserves to be supported.

Birth is a life changing event!

Each birth is an experience that will be carried in a mama's heart for the rest of her life. It's so important that she feels heard, safe, and well cared for during a time when she is so vulnerable. I believe the woman's body is designed so well and knows how to grow, carry, and birth the baby it was given. I believe babies are so smart, knowing how to signal when they're ready to be born and know how to navigate the birth canal. I believe that both the body and baby know how to work together during the birth experience.

I believe it's important for parents to prepare well for the birth experience. When parents are proactive in taking steps to prepare for the birth experience, it can help them minimize fear and feel more confident in their choices. It can also help the mother to listen to her intuition about decisions that need to be made for her and her baby. I think it's important to look at the overall picture of your unique situation and to individualize your care. I think it's also important to consider your preferences and birth goals, in addition to weighing the risks/benefits of a decision versus the risks/benefits of alternatives.

Interventions can be a useful tool, but I believe it's a tool that can often be overused. For many medically minded providers, birth is looked at as a problem where medical solutions are needed. That is when labor is not progressing to their expectations, and it needs to be tampered with to "speed" things up. Sometimes simple things are overlooked, like has the mother eaten lately, been properly hydrated, or has been balancing activity with rest. Does she feel safe, loved, and well supported, or does she feel like she is in fight or flight mode? Other times, the baby needs help rotating or readjusting their position with repositioning techniques, or mama needs suggestions on positions to help open up the specific area of the pelvis to make more room for the baby to keep moving down.

My role as a doula is to help parents see that childbirth is a natural, innate, and normal process for most women, requiring trust in the body's inherent ability and minimizing unnecessary medical interventions. If concerns arise during pregnancy or during labor, I believe there can be a more holistic approach with alternative options/solutions to help minimize medical interventions. I want every family to feel empowered to make informed decisions about their birth experience. It's important to find the right doula to meet you and your family's needs.
